why a Traffic or a dictionary app needs to know the phone number(s) I'm calling?

I'm new to Android ecosystem, I noticed some apps ask for permissions to collect information unrelated to their function, for example; access your contacts, or the phone number of the person you're talking to?
this makes me a bit concerned and skeptical about using such popular apps.
