Why does battery life on this phone suck?

No matter what I do I just can't get more than 3 hours of overall screen time even on the lowest setting. When I check my battery stats it says that my screen is taking up all the battery which is ridiculous because its at the LOWEST setting. The longest I've ever got was like maybe a little bit over 4 hours and that was on stock gingerbread. I switch to any ice cream sandwich ROM ( stock, cm9,aokp ect.) And its always 3 hours. Am I doing something wrong or is this just the phone ?

If you are getting longer what ROM/kernel/ setting/ app are you using?

Go back to gingerbread if you want the battery life like that or stay on ics, its up to you but the battery isn't bad, big screens are battery hogs but you could keep data off screen low brightness and have a dark background on your home screen for better life.

I do a combination of things and can get 6 hours with normal to heavy usage on cm9, depending on what I'm doing. Using Tasker to toggle off data and wifi when i turn the display off, setting the cpu at a max of 800MHz ondemand using antutu, keeping brightness as low as i can handle, almost black background, turning off notifications and background syncing of apps like gmail, facebook and instagram. Widgets are a source of battery drain as well so i only keep a clock. All you need to do is try out different things that you are comfortable with. Just don't expect it to lay more than half the day if you youtube and web browse a lot. I can make it to the evening if i barely use it.

I doubt that. Most smartphones see 3 to 5hrs screen time unless they have a battery higher than 2000mah. You're expecting way too much.

Turn of screen vibration and touch sounds etc. Also go to your apps and see what is running in the background, I'm hating Facebook because it is always running even though I have all the notifications off.

Ics-no good.

Gingerbread-good, very good, deluxe, delicious, heavenly and it won't melt in your hand.

My usage so far today. Played an album on Google play music, watched 15mins of youtube, web browsing, news app, torch, texting. At 66% after four hours. I'm on CM9 nightly 8.03 from xda, FG31 modem.

I flash the .tar.md5 in odin on my pc in the phone slot. Alternatively you can flash a .zip if you have a safe recovery.

Is direct boot cwm 5 a safe recovery?

I always use stock el26 cwm to be safe. I have used direct boot el29 on some occasions though. I flash that, then the modem, then the kernel for the rom i was using.
