Why does camera app open the gallery

Galaxy S8. My camera button usually goes straight to the gallery. If I click on the camera app, it's because I want to take a photo - I can open the gallery app if I want to scroll through past photos. The only way I can get straight to the photo taking interface reliably is from the lock screen; otherwise I have to click on the camera icon and most of the time have the gallery open, go to the top right menu, and select camera. There don't seem to be any settings options to turn that off. And it doesn't always happen that way- sometimes the camera icon opens directly to the camera. I haven't been able to detect a pattern, though.

Tl;dr: how do I get the camera icon to open the camera and not the gallery?

Is this from your home screen or does camera app go directly into gallery even through the app drawer? If it works properly through app drawer, then maybe your home screen shortcut got re-mapped to gallery instead of camera?? All I can think of ...

I am having the same problem. I'm pretty sure it was fine before the update. Now it's a pain. Please tell me how to fix this!! I cleared my defaults but it didn't fix it.
