Why does FACE UNLOCK only worked on the folded/close Pixel Fold

I guess the question covers the issue. Just curious why the unfolded FOLD can't use the inside camera to unlock the phone?

Doesn't face unlock requires a special sensor, not a regular camera? If so, that sensor is probably not on the inside of the fold.

Pixel 8's don't have a special sensor, they had to go through a vetting process to have the camera approved for this use though. The same with the outside camera on the fold.
