why does google assistant pop up when i hit home button on my S6?

forever, when i would press my "home button" on my samsung galaxy s6, it would bring me to the home screen. It didnt matter what app i was on. Now when i hit my "home button", i get a pop up "the google assistant is turned off. would you like to turn it on?" and an option for yes or no. when i click "no" it goes away and then i click it again and the same screen pops up. when i click yes "it gives me voice activated google assistant when i click on the "home button". I just want to be able to press the "home button" and have the home screen pop up. Please help me.

Welcome to Android Central. Google Assistant was added a while ago to the home button, but as a long press. If you just touch the button you should still go to the home screen as my S8 does.
