Why does google maps take forever to reroute?

When I miss a turn, google maps keeps saying it is rerouting, but it does not do it. It used to do it right away. It works fine on my wife's phone, but not on mine. What is happening?

What phone do you have? Do you have high accuracy turned on?

I have a Galaxy S5. My wife has the same phone and hers works.

Yes, I have high accuracy turned on.

It shows where I am on the map. It just keeps saying "Rerouting" without doing it.

I came here for the same reason. In the past it was very fast to reroute now it takes so long I kill the entire app and restart it. I have also noticed it keeps jumping to offline mode when this happens. If you look down by the ETA and see a small lightening bolt this indicates offline use. I deleted and removed all offline maps, but no use still happens. I am currently using an S6.

OK, solved mine. I had at one point installed wazz. Tested, didn't like and removed it. I felt like this issue started around the same time. So I did a full wipe of the phone. Issue as gone, rerouting work fast and magically again. So, I reinstalled wazz used it one. Then I uninstalled it. Tested google maps, same dame crap as before where maps just stayed on rerouting. Did a second full wipe and restore, google maps is back to perfection.

He asks how often we clear our caches. I haven't since the phone was new - but I don't run anything that's written to leave a lot of junk it its cache. Even in the play store, there are great apps, there are mediocre apps and there are apps that no one should ever run.

google maps navigation is garbage ,pure garbage and always has been
this is not a new issue at all , google maps driving directions navigation has NEVER worked right
i have it installed on 5 different devices , a samsung galaxy exhibt, a samsung galaxy avant,2 iphone 5c's one on IOS 7 and one on IOS 8 , and an android tablet on lolipop(just tested it again today on the lolipop tablet,FAIL), it will not EVER recalculate the route on ANY of these devices once you take even one single different turn from the suggested route ,and this has been going on for almost 2 years now and i always update the app when updates are available, and it has not ever worked once, i test it all the time and always get the same exact results , mine does not ever say "recalculating" it just continues to give you bogus directions, either getting you lost, leading you in circles or nearly getting you killed in an accident by telling to turn down one ways,sometimes it just goes on giving directions like you never veered off the original suggested route sometimes it gives you totally different directions than if you had stayed on the original route but not at all relevant to your current position this app just plain sucks and always has, i test it frequently when driving home and it always fails
and even if you do follow the prescribed route exactly it still fails ,at least 3 times with 2 different devices this POS has directed me to go past my highway exit ,then it tells you to get off the highway get back on in the opposite direction, get back off again and get back on again in the original direction and to take the exit you just passed it loops you all around for no reason it has done the same thing to me at least twice for my final destination as well , tells you to pass it if it's on a 2 way street and loop all the way around get on the other side of the street when you could have just pulled in. This app is retarded and has always been crap ,pure crap.
i can't believe google has not been sued over this , i am sure more than few people have been killed in accidents following their faulty garbage app
either fix it, pull it from the play store, or disable driving navigation
this is a liability

well at least your says rerouting , mine does not say anything it just keeps on giving you directions, WRONG ONES
DANGEROUSLY WRONG!
i have had this issue going on 2 years now across multiple devices both IOS and android and after several updates
and it also doesn't work even when you do follow the route exactly still tells you to go out of the way and to go in circles
google never fixes anything ,all they do is break things and make them worse and worse
