Why does Mobile Data need to be turned on to send photos?

It doesn't matter if I am on wifi, I can't send or receive photos without mobile data being turned on. I keep it turned off because I'm on a limited data plan, and this is a pain. Can someone explain this to me please cuz AT&T reps sure can't

Are you referring to MMS? If so, it is dependent on the mobile data network.

Yes, MMS. Came from an iPhone where photos are just integrated so this is new to me. Is there any other way to send/receive photos other than MMS?

You might want to look at your plan. Many times MMS counts towards your texting plan, not your data plan.

that's because you can send photo's via imessage. I'm sure that even on the iphone, if you send a picture to a friend that doesn't have an imessage, then I'm sure it will require a data to send.

BTW not to highjack this thread, I just came from an iphone as well. I just switched last friday to a Samsung G S 4

And This. Mobile data must be on for MMS messages. It shouldn't count against your data though.

To receive MMS yes. Normal text messages (just text) do not use data so mobile data isn't needed.

I didn't see anyone mention this, but instead of sending an image via text/sms - just send it in an email (like gmail) and the photos will be sent just fine via your Wifi connection.

If your on a shared plan or have unlimited text that includes data text (sms) so your covered its included yes it does take data but no its not counted against your data usage because its a text

I just got the s5 after having the HTC OneX, and I never had to turn on mobile data to send/receive mms texts. I kept mobile data off because I'm on a restricted plan as well (2gb a month). I'm afraid to keep MD on on the s5, I don't want it to run my data up. I'm always on wifi at home anyway when I'm on the Internet and whatnot. Are you sure mms doesn't eat into your actual mobile data plan? If not, and I keep MD on (as turning it off and on just to send/receive mms is a pain), will it still eat my data in the background even though I'm on wifi?

Ahhhhh at&t changed their policy sms messeges aren't counted under unlimited text anymore spent a half of an hour frustratingly arguing with at&t bc my mother's line has a data block but unlimited texting and they blocked her from sms

Same with my wife's phone. On prepaid Long life connection with Telstra , eats credit don't have data with plan, if bought it would only last a month then expire. Not sure if it would take from data plan. Also phone auto updates if switched on.
