Galaxy S4 restarts when trying to wake from sleep mode

(sorry for the duplicate post, I posted the original while not logged in)

My Galaxy S4 has been restarting at random times, but most frequently when it tries to wake up from sleep mode.

Typical Scenario:

My phone will go to sleep after inactivity, and upon trying to wake it up by pressing any button, nothing happens. Rarely, it will flash the screen or wake up from sleep mode about 10-15 seconds later, even rarer it will let me put in my passcode and begin using my phone. Sometimes, if I wake it up fast enough after going to sleep, it will wake up just fine. If it doesn't wake up after 15 seconds, usually it just restarts on its own, but if it doesn't restart on its own then I have to hold down the power button for 10 seconds (which seems to force a restart) or take the battery out.

Then, when I turn on the phone, I have to make sure I put in my passcode before it goes to sleep or else it will lock back up and/or restart again.

I've tried factory reset and cache clear, and that didn't seem to help at all. Running Lollipop (5.1 i think) on AT&T. Not sure if this is a hardware or software problem. I've tried taking out the SD Card and SIM card as well, and although it seemed like it fixed the problem initially, it does still happen with one or both of those removed.

Any clues? Is there any other software I can replace that's not touched during factory reset?

edit: i've turned on CPU debugging and notice that "android irq/343-max7769" seems to take up a ton of the CPU whenever my phone lags when trying to perform an action and I'm met with heavy lag/stalling. Upon turning on my phone again, it wakes for a brief second and i see that process hogging a ton of CPU and then it freezes/restarts. Guessing there's something wrong with the kernel? Do i need to do a full re-install of Lollipop, or will rooting help at all?

Yeah, it still happens in safe mode :(

I'll try flashing the ROM today while I'm at work, do I need to backup data beforehand?

Re: Galaxy S4 restarts when trying to wake from sleep mode

Can you also point me in a good direction for directions on how to root the phone? This is/was my first android device and I had previously not wanted to try it in case I screwed it up but now that my phone is already screwed up I'm ready for anything ;)

I'm actually not sure about if data gets wiped when you flash the ROM--I think not, but don't quote me on that. I'll ask some of the other Ambassadors. EDIT: I am told that it will not wipe your data. But it wouldn't hurt to make sure everything that's important is synced or backed up anyway.

Here's a forum for rooting: Samsung Galaxy S4 Rooting, ROMs & Hacks - Android Forums at AndroidCentral.com

Well, I tried flashing the stock ROM, but after it rebooted it just gets stuck on the AT&T logo (after the Samsung boot logo). I'm able to boot it into download mode, but cannot get to recovery mode or into the normal phone now. Any ideas? I'm downloading a different ROM from SamMobile but they cap your download speed so it's going to take a few hours to get it.

I was having trouble finding an odin-compatible (tar.md5) ROM on xda forums for some reason, is there a way to convert .zip ROMs to the tar.md5 that odin expects? I've tried extracting and just re-packing as a tar archive but that doesn't seem to work

Hmm, getting into unfamiliar territory for me. Let me see if others can help.
