Why does my headset mute button hang up calls?

Headset mute button hangs up call!

I am using a Plantronics .Audio 326 headset with my Samsung S4 (with an inline StarTech adapter to take the separate mic/headphone lines to the combo plug for my S4: 4-Position 3.5mm to Dual 3-position 3.5mm Headset Adapter | StarTech.com).

It has a very handy mute switch inline. However, if I try to activate the mute, it's hanging up my call!!!

Is this something that can be controlled via settings somehow? I see many people have asked this same question, but I've yet to encounter any useful answer. It appears this is a common concern, you'd think there'd be some simple solution.

Android: 4.3
ROM: stock Verizon (rooted)

It's probably a problem in the difference between Plantronics and the adapter look electronically and what the phone is looking to see. It's a hardware difference, so it's probably not possible to fix it in software. Check with Support to see if they have an adapter that works with the S4.
