Why does my HTC One M9 Stutter and stop when recording a video

I record my drive to and from work. About 20 minutes into the drive the camera will stop recording. I have done a hard reset; updated the software, and even tried it in safe mode. Verizon has sent me a replacement, and it is worst.

This started the first day I got the phone. I dismissed is as a weird setting, camera stops after so many minutes. But after awhile, it seems to be a problem with the phone.

I really like the M9, but it is important that I record videos while driving.

Welcome to Android Central! Is the video saving to internal storage or the microSD card? If the latter, the problem might be the card. Try a different one, or see if it happens on internal storage as well.

Video is saving to the phone memory, no memory card installed.

If I stand in my living room and slowly spin around with the phone in my hand, it will also stutter and stop.

Try wiping the cache partition, which won't erase any personal data: https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-20857

Cache was wiped. No difference.

Can you try a 3rd party video camera app, to see if it's an issue with the stock Camera app?

Sounds like it may be a firmware or hardware issue. Since this is a replacement unit, I'd lean towards firmware. Let's see if others have the same issue on the forums.

If you don't move the phone is it ok?

Nearly sounds like the gyro is interfering with it, maybe you could try turning screen rotation off.

I installed CameraMX, version 3.3.903. I noticed a couple of things. As the recording went on, it got dimer. When I restarted the recording, the level of brightness was back to normal. I did not record long enough, about 20 minutes, to get to the point of failing.

I was able to run a full test with the CameraMX. Same result, is started stuttering and finally stopped recording.

Same issues. I'm too cheap to buy a real camera and tried recording the kids on Christmas. Camera stuttered and sometimes froze while recording to both internal and external storage. Unlike OP, the times at which it did this were completely random though. Sometimes 2 minutes, other times around 5 minutes. Recording at 1080p.
