Why does my LG Lucid get VERY hot?

my LG Lucid gets VERY hot.

I took it to Verizon and they say its my battery, to replace battery. Then if it continues to get hot they will replace the phone. Is this a battery issue?

It could be battery, it could be device. There are various causes of heat.
