Why does my nexus 5 not notify me when someone replies to my texts

My nexus 5 has stopped notifying me when someone replies to me in the course of a conversation. It alerts me when a new text comes in but not once the conversation is in progress. I keep missing people's replies

What messaging app are you using? I would dig through the app settings and see if there's anything in the notification settings to make sure you are alerted when a new text is received. If you are using Hangouts for text messaging...consider a replacement. Hangouts is good, but there's better apps in the Play Store that are more rich in features for text messaging (Textra).

I too recommend Textra, it is a great app! As the user above me stated, perhaps try switching your default messaging app and see if the problem persists. Good luck!
