Nexus 7 (2012) Constant need to Wipe Cache Partition

My Nexus 7 (2012) is quite often, unresponsive. An incredible amount of lag, such that I push something and it's over 10-15+ seconds until any sort of response happens.

I'm tired of this, as it's been going on for over a year.
I've downloaded whatever updates Google has pushed through, yet none of them seem to help.

Android Version: 5.1.1

It's to the point, where I want nothing to do with either Asus and/or Android based products ever again.

Can anyone offer a solution that is easy enough to understand?
Why is it so difficult to create an Android piece of software that works on our 2012 Nexus 7 tablets?

Welcome to Android Central! Do the cache partition wipes help, if only temporarily? What happens if you boot into Safe Mode--is there still lag? https://support.google.com/nexus/answer/2852139?hl=en

If it still lags on Safe Mode, then it may be that the hardware itself that is starting to deteriorate. Perhaps the memory chips that were used were defective, or just wearing out naturally if you've used the tablet extensively over its lifetime.

Try a factory reset. Back up your personal stuff....pics, music etc. Everything else comes back if you have set to auto restore. Mine has been a lot better and almost like new since I did one after the 5.1.1 update. Still have some issues with chrome on occasion but so much better. Sounds like it doesn't work for everyone but worth a try

If you do a quick Google search you will find that nearly everyone who has updated their 2012 Nexus 7 to Lollipop is experiencing the same problem. It makes the device unusable. it is a very who documented issue. I think 5.1.1 isn't as laggy as 5.0.2 but it is still very much unusable. I was in the same boat as you, and finally found the solution to be to manually downgrade the device back to Kitkat 4.4.4. I did so two days ago and my tablet is running like absolutely new. of course, it is dated hardware so you're not getting breakneck speeds with ANY OS, but Kitkat seems to be the best bet so far.

Re: Nexus 7 (2012) Constant need to Wipe Cache Partition

The problem is the bad memory modules that were used in the 2012 units. Clearing caches, performing factory resets, and/or installing older versions of Android may produce temporary improvements - - or may not. If yours is requiring constant fiddling and still is badly laggy, just accept reality and replace it with something else.

This just might be the case :)
I have 5.1.1 running quite well on my N7 2012 but it is a bit newer than my original N7 which finally suffered the fried flash memory death.
I can't say its the case for everyone or anyone, but its a solid theory. These tablets are known to have cheap flash memory....

I unlocked bootlloader and rooted using Wugfresh root toolkit. Then used Rom manager to install Xenon HD Rom for Nexus 7. Not only do I get 5.1.1, but it's super smooth, peppy and no lag whatsoever!

Nice one. I was just browsing for ideas on a decent ROM and spotted this. Latest build running buttery smooth after despairing with a very laggy Lollipop for the last few months.
