why does my screen stay black and not wakeup when im on a phone call

when I am on the phone (pixel 2 XL) and I get an incoming call, i cannot see who it is and pushing buttons nor using fingerprint will make my screen illuminate so I can see the incoming call, check an email, etc??

it was not always like this, just started last couple weeks.

What happened a couple of weeks ago? Did you update the Phone app? If so, try uninstalling updates to it and see if it works correctly with the original version.
Does it work correctly in Safe mode? If so some 3rd party application is causing the problem.

Are you covering the ambient light sensor?

to the best of my knowledge i havent changed anything on the phone, where is the ambient light sensor?

Sounds like a problem with the proximity sensor.

I've had similar happen to me and touching the fingerprint sensor would get the screen to turn on.
