Why does my system memory take up so much space?

I have a zte model z799vl and I have only 2 small apps on it. But system memory takes up more than half my storage, how do I fix this?

Your device only has 8 GB of storage, that's not very much these days. For what it's worth - the "system" entry in the storage display on my Pixel 2 XL takes up 9.5 GB, more than your device has total. There isn't a whole lot you can do to decrease the storage usage of the OS.
