Why does no phone with 2 flashes have one on each side of the phone?

I was just thinking that all dual flash phones have the two led diodes on the same side of the lens. Why isn't there a phone with 2 of those on each side. You wouldn't get any brighter illumination, but you'd get better lighting in the photos (especially if you could control the brightness of each flash).

Is just be happy if the manufacturers paid more attention to the cameras in general. They can do a lot to improve performance but settle for just enough.

My guess is that an LED on either side of the lens would create awful redeye issues. I'd guess moving the flash to another part of the phone would be better for most pictures, but than macro/closeup would suffer. I'd love to see a detachable wireless flash, but now I'm just dreaming :)

Red-eye is resulted from the light source being too close to the lens, doesn't matter how many there are of where they're positioned.

Yes, but symmetric flashes exacerbate the issue. A flash on one side of the lens is at least offset so looking to the other direction has a prayer of helping. One on either side can only hurt. Either way, lighting on a camera phone will always be awful until they come up with off-phone lighting options - anything close to the lens just doesn't work.

That's just silly, why would you get proper off-camera lighting and then use the phone to take the picture?
