Why does this phone use so much data?

It seems like this phone can use a lot of data, sometimes even while on wifi. an example of an app that does this is TuneIn Radio. Thanks.

At least on Wi-Fi, you're not on the plan. Verizon has opted not to activate the FM chip in our phones as yet, so any music you hear, you are streaming over the Internet or your data plan.

Go to advanced wifi settings and uncheck avoid bad wifi signals. This is on by default and uses 4G when wifi signal is not strong.

I went into each app and set the disable background data option. It has saved me much data.
