Why does this phone use so much RAM??

Flash a new rom. It's touchwiz and all of the boat ware. I'm usually at around 3 to 5 max with apps running. With stock 4.1 and touchwiz I was at 5-9.

You are absolutely correct. It isn't Android per se, it is the underlying Linux kernel's virtual memory manager that behaves this way. And it is a good thing. :-) If you double your RAM, the VMM will fill it up eventually, and that is exactly what you want.

The processor, RAM and internal flash storage speed should already take care of speed. Utilising most of the available RAM to just keep applications and processes at hand - often applications and processes that aren't used or needed, thus the argument falling flat - especially in a device with limited battery resources, just shows that the underlying system is inefficient and has a lot of maturing to do.

You don't understand how background apps are handled in Android, nor, apparently, how RAM uses battery.

1) Inactive apps don't use any more battery than "unused" RAM. They're not "running," they're just bits in memory, ready to be accessed if needed.
2) Every bit of RAM is constantly refreshed, whether it contains an active app, and inactive app, or is filled with zeros. That's simply how RAM works.
3) Refreshing RAM uses the same amount of battery whether it's refreshing actual data, zeros, ones, or nulls.

I have to ask you Meyer, do smartphone processors have DMA ram yet like L1, L2 caches. It'd be nice to see a processor with a 256Mb L1 and 128Mb L2.

Sprint GS3 Running TN's Msg and Chubbs

My Ram does the same thing!!! also on gs3 so maybe its a malfunction with the phone. idk but this phone has done nothing but **** me off since I first bought it about a year ago. if it isn't the excessive and largely unnecessary bloatware, then it's the suckass connection that can't seem to ever connect!!! it always switches back and fourth from 4g & 3g, like WTF! and the funny thing is we don't even get 4g where I live. the closest 4g tower is in Sanfrancisco 40 miles away so how tf does it even get reception!? Im using sprint btw...(which sux *** itself). but as for the ram problem try downloading "Automatic task killer"and limit the power of these stupid service providers that want to add unremovable bloatware! to limit their power even more!! I would suggest "rooting" your phone, but beware this will VOID YOUR WARRANTY (figures -.-) although you will gain full control and access of your phone. ie, you can uninstall whatever tf you want! :D as it should be your Right To! and in my opinion bloatware requiring ANY type of personal permissions should be ILLEGAL!!! since you have no control over what they can put on your device. unless you buy the phone from the manufacturer itself or root it. also, if you root your phone be very careful about what you uninstall. if you uninstall an application that is absolutely required for your phone to perform. you will "brick" it (render it useless) so be careful! I heard theres a way you can also "Unroot" your phone thus restoring your warranty. this is especially helpful if you need maintenance done to your device. hope you found any of this to be helpful!

Because TouchWiz is one of the most inefficient pieces of software to ever be created for a mobile platform. Unfortunately :(

Disagree with you. TW is actually not that bad. My phone uses btwn 645MB-1.1Gb of RAM, but that depends what apps are in use...
