Personalized ringtone doesn't "stick"

I have a new Samsung Galaxy S5. I have set personalized ringtones and personalized text message sounds for my friends and family. I know how to do that! The problem is, some of these don't "stick" and what I mean by that is, even though on the contact info it says that personalized ringtone or text sound is set, when I get a call, the default ringtone or message sound plays. And it's not consistent. Some personalized ones work, others don't. They all worked on my S4. While this is not some dire problem, it IS frustrating because it SHOULD work. Any ideas?

I had this issue also. Rather embarrassingly, I've solved it.
The culprit was 'Volume Butler', which is an app. that creates Profiles of volume settings which can be set to Schedules. There is a 'feature' within the app which allows you to have different Ringtones and Notifications at different times of the day, and every Schedule I created (weekends, nights, etc.), had defaulted to the 'Pyxis' ringtone for some reason.
Every time my volume Profile changed, my custom Ringtone was reverting to bleedin' Pyxis, over-riding the Android system.
I went through every Profile and changed the default Ringtone to the one I wanted and all is now working properly. Duh!
If I were you, I'd heck for other installed app's which may be over-ruling the Android OS.

TOP TIP:

Never, ever, store ringtones and notification or alarm tones on an external SD card because sooner or later the phone will revert to the default tones as it reads phone memory quicker and easier.
