Why don't more companies use the Essential Phone style notch?

When I saw the design for the Essential Phone, I was both confused and intrigued. The big chin at the bottom was a bit annoying at first glance, but the actual notched portion seemed like a decent idea, if a company was dead set on having a notch on their phones. Why do you think companies like Huawei, LG, and (almost definitely) OnePlus have not used this style of notch, especially if the phone does not need facial recognition tech?

I'm sure we will see more notch phones this year.

Have to say, I find it annoying the whole Notch with Chin idea, it sort of contradicts the entire point of the phone being "all screen" .

Either you do a chin and forehead and make them slim as possible aka Galaxy S9 OR you get all Bezels as far to the edge as possible on all sides and put a notch, a la iPhone X.

What LG with the G7 and Huawei with P20 have done does annoy me and I am glad they allow hiding the notch.

Agreed - notches will definitely become more popular. I personally think Essential and Huawei have done well with notches thus far.

I'm not a fan of notches but if I had to choose a phone that had one, it'd be the Essential or P20.

I hate notches. got a Razer phone. glad there no notches and screen protector is just a rectangle with no cutouts.

I do like what Essential did with the Notch but wish they eliminated the bottom chin.

Do it right or don't do it all.

I'm not exactly sure why people have an issue with the chin...but maybe because my Cro Magnon fingers don't have the range of motion to reach all the way to the bottom of the phone to reach buttons one-handed, so I appreciate the buttons being a bit higher.

My guess is its because it doesn't look like an iPhone, and thats what everyone tries to copy lately.

Personally I think I can learn to tolerate a notch of some sort. But I would prefer big top/bottom bezels and no notch. I do not like glass screens that extend all the way to the edges. But thats more for durability reasons than anything cosmetic.

I like how LG is doing it where the notch can be hidden, but the dark band still used to display information. Its not too far removed from the secondary display on the V10-20 of eras past.

You bring up excellent points; especially about the LG still making good use of the notch.
