Why don't my Emails sync unless manually updated?

Email won't sync unless manually updated.

I have an HTC M8 and using the stock email app, my email (POP) has stopped updating unless I manually open the app and update, even though I have it set to update every 5 minutes.

Welcome to Android Central! Try removing the email account, then adding it back again.
