Messaging icons do not depict number of unread messages

My issue is this, my messaging icons do not depict number of unread messages, at all. Including the Samsung default text messaging app, Gmail and Verizon email. They did when I first got the phone (Galaxy S6) but have not at all today after doing some simple personalization.
Has anyone else seen this?
Does any one now how to correct this?
I have searched the web a good part of this today with no avail.
Additionally, I have gone into app manager and the individual apps and the show notifications check box is checked.
