Why don't my phone read micro SD card?

I have a Alcatal one touch the storage is full i purchased a new micro SD card and when I mount it tells me to format card and it still can't be read.

Welcome to Android Central! The SD card could be corrupt, defective, or counterfeit. Can your computer read it?

I had that same problem had to format it using my laptop then it works fine.

My Alcatwel Also does not save anything. I thought that these AD cards came formated when pyrchased new. There was no mention in or on the packaging to format.

I guess it will not hurt to format it and try again as it is not working now without formatting it!
