Why hasn't my phone encrypted?

I need help with an encrypting device issue! I followed all the steps I needed to do before encrypting. And after that I clicked encrypt device, and the little android guy popped up and then it went black but there is a little blue led on in the top left (where every color led is) and it hasn't done anything for almost 5 hours now! It said before I did it it may restart several times, but I had done absolutely nothing. HELPPPP!!!!!
