Why is my battery icon now red after update?

Before the most recent update on my pixel (Aug 10), the battery icon was white on grey and didn't turn red until battery saver came on at 5%. Since then, I keep missing that my Pixel needs to be charged. It powers off because I don't see the warning. Any thoughts to help me from losing anymore unsaved work?

Sounds like you have battery saver on all time time. Check it out in battery settings. Additionally, your post indicates that you routinely let it get down to extremely low levels. The phone should ideally be charged prior to getting to 40% and letting it drop below 20% should be avoided at all reasonable costs.
