Why is my battery life so low on the LG G6?

No problem. The reason I'm here saying all this is because I realized there are too many battery saving tips and apps out there which are misleading. There's no real help and deep explanation. So after several hours of research and weeks of testing and comparing etc etc. I'm here to help uncover and explain underlying issues and provide actual results. Googling or looking in the play store won't help the average user since there are too many options and most of them don't actually do anything. Or they do too much. Just want more people to know.

And... my findings also not needing ROOT means this can apply to anyone.

It shows that you've done your research! Thanks again! :)

Fast Reboot Pro (located separately in the store) provides a user interface with options like I talked about. The non-pro only does a Fast Reboot every time you click the app. I forgot to explain that.

Gotcha. So are you using the pro version?

Gonna bump this thread since I've experienced less than stellar battery life on my US unlocked G6 (US997). I get 3 hours SOT over 15 or so hours, which gets me through the workday but heavy use after that requires a charger. Is the unlocked version less optimized for Verizon's network, contributing to my lousy battery life?

I'm back on my Moto Z Play again since I've been spoiled by its battery life, which makes my G6's battery intolerable for me.

Awesome. Works perfect for me. Beats the 4-6hrs I was getting.
Your system didn't really work for me, but I think it may have been because I had to many messaging notifications for the phone to ever really take advantage of doze.

I didn't do a clean install when I first got the phone, so I decided to do a factory reset and track battery life as I reinstall apps. I was getting about 3.5 hours before, and I've gotten as much as 5 hours with heavy gaming use (with about 7 hours total life). Now I just have to see how mixed usage works out.

I can't vouch either way for Verizon affecting battery life on the G6; but here are some things you could try:

- turning down AOD brightness
- disable apps like Facebook/Messenger from running in the background; or
--> download Facebook/Messenger Lite, which helps use less "power" and will also give you less lag
- if your phone is often on Vibrate mode, that itself uses up more juice
- turn down screen brightness
- also, I've heard that using dark wallpapers helps battery life. Not sure how effective or accurate that is, but that makes sense; especially since I've heard that using dark themes will help in that department as well.

This is true for LED-based screens because only lit LEDs use power, but the G6 does not use an LED-based screen. On the G6's LCD screen it makes no difference because there is no difference in power between a dark and bright pixel (the light comes from the backlight which is uniform). Lower overall brightness does help in either case though.

Because of this, the whole AOD thing makes more sense for LED screens than LCD, but I've not found that it makes much difference for me since my phone is mostly in my pocket and thus the AOD is not on very much - and it's pretty dim when it is on.

Ah okay - thank you so much for filling me in! Glad I know that now!

I do all of that already, except for the AOD brightness (is it even possible to change the brightness?) and vibrate nose. How much of a difference could vibrate nose make?

I average around 17 hours of total use with about 5 hours screen on time consistently.

I know that some phones with AOD have the option to make the screen dim or bright. Perhaps check under your Display settings.

Well, I read somewhere that the phone takes a bit more power to vibrate than to just make a tone; so having both or just the vibration can take a bit more of a toll. Not sure how much, but a little bit.

For example, I left my phone on Vibrate last night and when I woke up, I noticed a bigger (not super large, but a bit more noticeable) drain than if I were to leave my phone on Sound Mode overnight.

Just my opinion, but I don't do much by way of turning certain features on or off on my phone to try and squeeze more battery life out of my phone. I bought a secondary external battery and use it throughout the day to top off my phone. I bought a phone to use it, not to turn certain useful features off. Battery life is so subjective anyway based on which apps people use. If you spend a lot of time on websites or apps with just text and very little images or videos, you'll use far less battery. So, a person could theoretically do everything out there under the sun, and still never seen the numbers that others are seeing.

This endless searching for more and more battery life from our phones has been going on for as long as we've owned them. Each generation of smartphones, we think it's somehow supposed to be better. But yet we want our phones to be more powerful. To be able to do more for us while using less battery. To be able to load things quicker.

My point is that we should only be comparing our own usage against ourselves. No two people will use their phones in the same exact way.

I'm personally not going to cripple my phone and usage to try and squeeze another 30 minutes of usage. For me it's simple. I just plug in an external battery into it and continue to go about my day as usual. My life is now worry free when it comes to how much battery life I have left. Believe me, three years ago, I was at the stage where I stressed about battery life. So I went through all the steps that others said I should do to find this elusive screen on time that others were achieving. I found that I didn't enjoy using my phone at all.
