The funny thing about the traffic card is I accidentally said I use public transit (which I don't) so now that card won't tell me how long my commute is and I can't figure out how to fix it. I haven't put a lot of thought into it because I only work 2.5 miles away from my house and I have that stuff turned off because it was too much of a battery hog. I'd like to have it on because there are a lot of cool features, but I can't justify wasting that much battery on stuff that's only cool and not actually super useful to me.Thanks. That's good to know. This bothered me a lot when I first got my One. Although it's nice to have Google Now show me how long it'll take to go to work/home, the frequent location checking seemed to drain my battery. I just turned that off, and (dunno if that's directly related but) my battery life has been pretty great. It idles with low usage, and I can get through the day without ever worrying about recharging my phone.
Strangely enough, I found that just disabling any cards that might check your location wasn't good enough. It worked for about 3 days and then the number of times it checked my location went back up to about 3/4 of what it was before. Actually stopping Google Apps from checking my location made a gigantic difference. On days when I'm home a lot (which happens quite a bit on the weekends with a 2.5 year old who's potty training and a 2 month old) it's down to like 200-300 times per day (I have Tasker profiles that check my location if I'm not home). If it's a normal day and I go to work it's more like 800-900 times. With Now cards that use location off but Access location on it started at 800-900 times but creeped up to anywhere from 1200-1400 times per day. With turning all Now cards on it was anywhere from 1300-2000 times per day.
Full disclaimer, I have a Galaxy S4, not a One. However, this seems to be a Google/Android issue rather than a OEM/device issue.
