Why is my correctly taken video rotated by my Android?

Correctly taken video is rotated by android.

I took some video with my G3 in landscape mode. When trying to view it in the gallery it shows rotated at 90 degrees and I can't watch it the right way up. It automatically gets uploaded to google and it appears at 90 degrees there too.

The video was taken correctly so can anyone help me get android to see it correctly?

What was your camera's resolution while taking the vidoe? There is a posibility your camera was on landscape, but at a lower resolution, may be at 320*240(4:3) instead of 1280*720(16:9). Can you try checking the settings? Then is it one video that misbehaves or lots of them?

Welcome to Android Central! Do the videos actually look sideways? I'm not sure if this would matter, but is your Auto-Rotate turned off? If it is, then I wonder if the Camera was thinking that you were taking the video in portrait mode (even though you were holding it landscape), and saved it that way.

Checking the metadata with exiftool shows that the width is 1920 height 1080, but the rotation parameter is 90.

The auto rotate is turned on. The video looks correct if I tilt my head 90%. I can view it correctly if I turn off autorotate as it starts off on my phone in fullscreen portraight but I can then rotate my phone without the video rotating away from me. This doesn't help when I view the file on my tv though.

I can only think the phone thought it was in portraight mode when I took the video even though I was in landscape, except why didn't the video get taken in portraight mode if the phone thought it was that way up if that was the case!? It's not a problem with my phone (LG G3) though as my wife has the same issue occasionally (S5) and searching the internet shows others with the same issue.

That's a headscratcher. Does it persist after rebooting the phone?

I wonder if another app that also has permissions for the camera is causing the issue. What happens if you boot into Safe Mode? https://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-11934
