why is my galaxy tablet 3 screen black?

it is on but black the only thing visible is the time battery signal and wifi

Welcome to Android Central! Is the battery icon at the very top of the screen, or is it a big one in the center? If it's in the center, the device is powered off--press and hold Power to power it on. Sometimes you have to keep it down for a good 10 seconds or so.

If it's at the very top of the screen, and nothing else works, then it's probably frozen. Press and hold the Power button for 10-15 seconds to force a shutdown, wait 10 seconds, then power back on again.
