why is my Gmail not working?

I am only able to send and receive mail in my email app.I can't do anything in my Gmail app.Very strange,it ask my for a email address and when I give it,it responds that I already have that account and it stops there.It instructs me to create a new account and I have a few times already and none of them gets me anywhere!
Anyone has solution to this problem?

Do you have Sync turned on?

Sorry, I am pretty new in this and do not know where do I turn Sync on.I have looked in the Gmail app. and see nowhere Sync and the email app.in the Data&Sync says Email last synced ..........I have a mark On.

You should have a sync toggle in your notification drawer make sure that is turned on and you will get gmail notifications.

Yes,I do see it and its turned on ,but still I can't use Gmail.The email app.is working,but the Gmail app.is not.I figure the problem must be in the phone,because the Gmail app..working on the comp.but not on the phone.
