Why is my nexus 7 2012 just plain dead?

Updated my N7 1gen to lollipop, and all SEEMED ok at first, then I noticed some apps were crashing over a day or so, and the device was being difficult to switch on (by holding power button for 10-30 secs), then on accessing google play it just switched itself off (it was at least 50-60% charged) and no amount of button holding in ANY combination of length of time, and/or holding buttons down will get it to start or enter the boot screen. It's now utterly dead.

My 6yr old is devestated, as he has lost all his minecraft worlds and various educational programs he loves. I cannot BELIEVE a 2 year old device can just pack up like this as it has been mollycoddled its whole life.

Welcome to Android Central! Sorry to hear about that. Tech products unfortunately don't have a 100% guarantee against failure--it just happens sometimes. You could try popping off the back and checking all of the connections.
