Why is my phone using mobile data for 'system updates'?

Hey y'all,

I'm new to this forum as I usually use XDA, but nobody answered me on there, so I decided to try this.

My phone is a Moto G Power (2020) and it is rooted with a custom ROM, Havoc OS. Recently I noticed that my mobile data is being chewed up massively by "system updates". I put it in quotes because there are no such system updates happening on my phone. Anyways, my carrier does confirm the usage, which is even more troubling.

So should I just switch to a different ROM, or something else?

Let me begin by saying that you were probably in a better place when you were at XDA. They do way more with root and ROMs than AC.

In the meantime, where did you get your ROM? I mean how trusted was the source, did you use XDA to find it or what? Security is one of the biggest reasons "given" for why Android and carriers don't want you to root. The other reason is that you can put a stop to their data collection and ad revenue. Anything can be in a ROM, including keyloggers, tunnels and portals which is why trusted sources are paramount.

On that note have you gone to the source? Have you attempted to contact the ROM developer, ROM supplier or other ROM users?

Could it be possible that these system updates are from the ROM developer? Once rooted Android/Google pretty much cuts you off. Carriers won't push OTAs to devices that are unlocked or running unofficial versions of Android.

Many of us, at least a lot of us Samsung owners wish we had this problem because it stinks to have to have a WiFi connection to get a system update or security patch. LOL

Vidjunky correct , try to get in contact with the dev of that Rom or maybe go back to stock firmware see if its still happening. In the rooting world its best to know people with experience before diving into it as there always something going happen and then when it does youll end up looking for answers or trial by error yourself.

It's not a Samsung issue, it's your carrier if you can't download updates over data. I'm on Verizon, all my Samsung updates for 8 years have been via data.

It's weird that it works for you when it didn't work for me on Verizon, and how many times this question pops up when updates are released at Samsung Members forums. Even the update screen only mentions WiFi and has no data option.

Perhaps it's based on location or device.

To answer your first question, I got the ROM from my phone's XDA forum and Havoc OS is even an official rom. I contacted the dev, but never got a response.

At this point I think I'm just going to switch to a new ROM and see I this happens, because it didn't on stock.

Any official ROMs you recommend I should try?

If it didn't happen on the stock firmware then I'll lean towards the Rom u installed , not sure what other to recommend but xda has those answers and try to install ones that the DEv supports
