Why is my Pixel offline?

Got a Pixel XL yesterday. It now tells me it is offline in a part of town where that is very unlikely. Could I have something set wrong? I suppose there could be a problem with Verizon, but also seems unlikely.

Hard to say without knowing a lot more details. I would contact the nearest Verizon store. Maybe they're working on a tower, but without being there with your phone, that's a complete guess on my part.

Apparently, I unknowingly turned cellular data off.
