Why is my S5 so laggy/sluggish when compared to my friend's new iPhone 6 Plus and old iPad 2?

Re: Why is my S5 so laggy/sluggish when compared to my friend's new iPhone 6 Plus...

A lot of people confuse speed with smoothness. My S5 lags. There are over 500 threads on AC complaining about lag on the S5. YouTube videos show the delayed responsiveness. Yet dozens of people here continue to swear theirs doesn't lag one bit. Well, I don't believe them because all the evidence, including my experience, indicates otherwise. Whether or not it lags is not a question IMO, whether or not it is enough to bother them is the question. That said, smoothness isn't everything, which is why I kept the S5. Some people can't seem to understand that concept either.
Agreed, 100%. I for one, wish I didn't notice the animation quirks (or that they didn't bother me)...I'd be much happier! :)

Agreed I think you got the best description term (animation quirk) because that's what it appears to be to me. The S5 has plenty of power and it can drive any app and run any launcher with ease but for some reason every now and then it has these little quirks that occur every now and then when I pull down the notification tray, or when I'm running an app and get a phone call. It must be a design flaw idk. But from what I hear 4.4.4 update fixes that and the eventual Android L, I'm sure will probably make it even more smooth. The animation quirks can be annoying but they are few and far between and I think all the features on the S5 outweigh the annoyance. I run a custom launcher with 2 additional layover launchers simultaneously and my phone does everything I want and more. I love my S5 and apparently it's only going to get better!

If you say so. I don't agree.

In any case, the video I posted removed any argument IMO.

If it's an app issue, thats not Android. Thats the app.

That being said, I am not seeing anything resembling what you posted on my tablet.

I can tell you emphatically, I disagree. I have used iOS devices many times. My Apple friends (none of whom are techies) use me for tech support on them.

That goes both ways.

You don't need to justify your decisions to me. You are entitled to an opinion. I don't agree with you though.

It would not matter to me personally, and for the same reason. I'm not having multi-touch issues on mine.

He has provided you with countless facts and evidence yet you discredit everything he says.

Frankly, I believe some people have a lot of personal emotion vested into their OS of choice. As an avid enthusiast of technology, I judge tech based on my needs, I don't bash one side or the other if it doesn't meet my needs.

With that said, if you can't see that iOS is a faster OS than android than you are surely blinded by a deep devotion to Android. No OS is perfect thus admitting one aspect is better than the other is not that big of a deal.

I like to compare iOS and Android with a car analogy. iOS is like a custom race car with all the seats stripped out, no air conditioning or other features but it is extremely fast and does its job well.

Android on the other hand is like a BMW M5 or similar, it is still extremely fast but it comes with leather seats, AC, and a whole boatload of other features which add "weight" and as such the race car will be a bit faster overall.

It also doesn't help that android phones don't get the optimization that iPhones do, Apple controls every aspect of the iPhone's production and software. Android manufacturers simply refer to the parts bin for their devices and are only able to do so much in terms of optimization when the OS is out of their hands as are the majority of the parts.

Which OS do I prefer? Android for the open nature of the OS but you have to give credit where it's due.

I switched from an iPhone 3GS to the Nexus One back when Android was in its infancy and the app store was non-existent with an estimated 50k apps. Most people who are such religious Android fanatics who openly bash other OS's haven't experienced Android at its beginning. I am scared to imagine the kind of things they would say about it if they had experienced it back then. Without iOS, android may well have ended up a completely different OS, it was the desire to compete with iOS that pushed Android's innovation and led to the product we have today.

It's easy to bash and downgrade the competition but it takes character to admit to negatives but also to acknowledge the positives of others, once people begin to realize this, that is when the true innovation will happen in the smartphone industry.

Again, smooth does not equal fast. In fact, in many cases, animations make iOS slower to perform some tasks. Bottom line is that all of today's flagship phones are fast enough that speed is not an issue for 99.999% of consumers.

Purpose-built race car vs sport sedan is a terrible analogy on several levels.

Well, 4.4.4 does help Touchwiz but not completely. The biggest differences are the accuracy and speed of the fingerprint reader and cold-loading the camera, both of which are much improved for me. I wouldn't expect L to resolve everything either. I've heard that for years, from ICS to JB to KK but Samsung has yet to prove they can write good software. It used to be all Android OEMs were the same way, but today Touchwiz stands alone as the worst OS on any flagship phone. IMO of course.

No...the video I posted does that.

He has not posted countless anything...he posted two pictures taken with a camera. Pictures which are not consistent with any other pictures on the internet. I disagree with you that he is correct by default. Sorry.

Unlike him, I'm not asking you to take my word for it. Look at the video and judge for yourself. It looks nothing like the pictures he posted IMO.

Frankly, I believe some people have a lot of personal emotion vested into their OS of choice.
Yeah, and he totally doesn't, right?

With that said, if you can't see that iOS is a faster OS than android than you are surely blinded by a deep devotion to Android.
...because you are definitely not biased. So I should ignore my own experiences and just take your word for it. Ok.

Which OS do I prefer? Android for the open nature of the OS but you have to give credit where it's due.
And if someone doesn't agree with your opinion, it must mean they are wrong. Makes perfect sense.

Without iOS, android may well have ended up a completely different OS, it was the desire to compete with iOS that pushed Android's innovation and led to the product we have today.
The exact same thing is true in reverse. The reason this is even an issue is because Apple tried to claim they invented everything and that everyone was copying them.

It's easy to bash and downgrade the competition but it takes character to admit to negatives but also to acknowledge the positives of others
So you are saying Apple had no character. I agree.

Whilst my experience are somewhat outdated, I had a S3, TouchWiz is renowned for being resource heavy and causing lag. When I had an S3 I found opening the camera, phone or gallery apps to take an absolute age, upwards of 3 seconds. I found the same on friends S4's.

It not a hardware problem as I moved on to AOSP and it disappeared instantly so it's just Samsungs inability to optimise. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the it was the same on the S5.

Here's an article from a few years ago that show why Apple devices have a smoother interface compared to Android. Now since the article is a few years old and Android has implemented hardware acceleration in JB itself I don't know how relevant it is any more but if Apple still prioritises touch input over everything else then an iDevice should provide a smoother experience.

Can't post link yet :/ it's a redmondpie article, can provide a link via PM if someone wants to read.

I remember reading that some time ago.

I've had numerous phones: HTC Hero -> HTC EVO 4G -> Motorola Photon -> Nexus S 4G -> GALAXY S2 -> EVO LTE -> Atrix HD -> DROID RAZR MAXX -> DROID RAZR MAXX HD -> DROID DNA -> GALAXY NOTE 2 -> iPhone 4 -> iPhone 5 32GB -> iPhone 5S 32GB

and tablets: HTC Flyer -> Moto Xoom -> Moto Xyboard 10.1 -> iPad 3 -> Nexus 7 (2012) -> Nexus 7 (2013) -> iPad Air

Nothing, nothing running Android is as smooth as iOS. I bought a N7 (2013) hoping to get back into Android but it just didn't operate as smoothly as I'd like. I got the iPad Air and am much happier. iOS's OS leaves a bit to be desired, but it's App quality is unmatched. Jailbroken iOS devices are where it's at. I plan to keep my Jailbroken iPhone & iPad for a very long time.

I spent far more for the iPad, but frustration free usage is worth it, every single penny. After buying and reselling the Nexus 7, I profited $9.01.

Some people are in love with their Android devices (same with iOS users), but I don't really care who makes the device. User experience is at the top of my priority list, for my tastes, Android just isn't there yet.

At the end of the day, its all user preference anyway.

Just recently switched to the iPhone 6. I never knew just how bad the lag is on the S5 was until I switched to iPhone. Even apps installed way faster. Google needs to do something about android, I still love android but they have to get this lag and fragmentation under control. Is it a java vs c++ issue? Then again a morelikely culprit is Samsung with its horribly laggy touchwiz crap. I've also heard android requires more RAM. Cant understand why then they wont unlock the bootloader. I'd be curious to see how fast cyangomod would run on s5
