Why is my Samsung Galaxy S3 phone not turning on?

Hi, all:

My phone won't turn on. I was originally moving all of my files (around 11 GB's worth) from internal memory to the external SD card, and it died during this process. Other than the menu button needing to be pushed a bit harder to work after having the phone in my pocket during heavy rain for ~25 min (this was a week or two ago), it had been working normally up until today.

When I tried turning the phone back on after it died today, it showed the 'Galaxy S3' white-text on the black screen and just stayed there until I hard-removed the battery. This happened twice. Then I got into my car and tried charging it, and it did show the battery icon after attempting to power on a couple of times, but then it stopped doing even this much. Since, the screen has simply not turned on at all, even after being hooked to two different chargers (and charging on/off with one) for some minutes.

Things I've tried:
-Charging the battery independently and putting it back in
-Charging the phone with my and another, functioning battery, as well as with no battery--the charging LED has turned red under all of these conditions (more often without a battery, strangely), but is very fickle (my input jack has had problems for a while, but not to this extent)
-Pushing and holding the power button numerous times

And still no on-phone.

Any ideas?

Thanks for the response, Nicole Thomas. I think I will visit a Samsung store tomorrow and see if they can offer any definitive insight. I'm still mystified by the LED light going on more often (albeit still very fleetingly, until I disconnect-reconnect) without the battery when I hook the phone up to charge, though...would be cool to know what this is about.
