Why is my Samsung S5 not recognizing my password/pin?

Why is my Samsung S5 not recognizing my password/pin? I've had the same pin for years.

Out of nowhere, my Samsung S5 is not recognizing my pin to unlock the phone. I'm down to 1 attempt left before it factory resets. Is this a common problem with an S5?

Welcome to Android Central! It's actually warning you that it will wipe the phone after one more failed attempt? Sometimes it will ask for your Google information instead.

Is it a numeric PIN, or an alphanumeric password? If the latter, make sure the keyboard isn't set to CAPS LOCK.
