Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? If the screen flashes off and on, but the phone doesn't actually shut down, then it's not the battery. It could be a faulty smartcover sensor, or perhaps you have a magnet nearby that is activating the smartcover sensor (which detects nearby magnetic fields--that's how a smartcover causes the screen to shut off when you close the lid). Or it might be a loose connection inside the phone.
