Why is my SD card suddenly not appearing or usable?

SD card suddenly not appearing or usable.

My SD card has suddenly become unusable. Here are some potential clues:

I have settings set to store pictures and videos on the card. Yesterday I uploaded a lot of pictures to my computer so I could delete them from the phone. I needed room to make a longer video. After I finished filming (several shorter videos, and some pictures), I could see that the pictures and videos were in two separate areas inside Gallery. When I got back home last night and I was going to upload the videos to edit them, the ones on the SD card were gone. I can't get the phone to access the SD card or show what is on it.

I have tried:

1. Turning the phone off and back on.
2. Going into settings to see if the card is mounted. It's not, so I tell it to mount, but it does nothing.
3. I have removed and replaced the card.
4. Tried accessing the phone using Disk Utility (on Mac) with the phone plugged into the Mac. It does not find the phone.

Thanks for any advice you can give me.

Microsd cards have the durability of toys and should never be your sole means of data storage.
