Why is my Skype voice garbled?

Skype voice garbled

I just purchased an ASUS me581c running Kitkat 4.4.2
I installed SKYPE from the Play Store
Video works fine as well as hearing the other person but my voice is sounds garbled to them
I tried calling he SKYPE test line and recorded my voice - on playback it sounded garbled just as my contacts said.
What could be the problem?
Tried uninstall SKYEPE and reinstalling - same problem
Googling the issue, I found other people are experiencing the same issue
Any suggestions

My father-in-law just bought this same tablet and has the same issue. Were you ever able to get it resolved? He's got 4.4.4 & whatever the current version of Skype is. Thanks!
