Why is standby battery drain so awful?

I recently bought an 8" Galaxy Tab S2. It's my first Android device. I don't have an issue with battery drain while I'm using it, but I'm utterly stunned with how fast it drains while in standby.

When I took it off the charger Friday night it was at 100%. I used it for about 30 minutes then set it down, not charging. When I woke up Saturday morning it was at 75%, I used it for 15 minutes or so then put it down and left the house. I picked it up again late Saturday evening and it was at 46%. I didn't touch it again until Sunday evening, and it was dead when I picked it up.

So, it was off the charger for about 48 hours, with maybe an hour of usage tops during that time, and that completely drained the battery. My iPad would have still been around 85% charged under the same circumstances. Is this normal for the Tab S2, or an Android device in general?

See the settings. I recommend to turn off the wifi when the tablet sleeps. It can be done automaticaly.

Maybe you have a rogue app sucking your battery? My battery life on standby or during normal usage is surprisingly good.

My Tab S2 9.7" has really good battery life, even on standby, but I turn WI-FI off and the brightness scale all the way to the left when I'm all done using it for the night. I guess it's possible that you got a bad unit also?

I would suggest checking your battery statistics to see what app is listed as using a lot of battery. The stock battery info is often not very helpful, so to really get to the bottom of it I would suggest getting Better Batter Stats or Wakelock Detector apps and checking for wakelocks with those (I think you need to root to really get the full info from them tho). As others said, I would set the wifi to not be on while device is sleeping, and/or keep the device in power saving mode. By far, the biggest improvement to idle drain for me was disabling Location.

Hopefully samsung gets the Marshmallow update out soon so we can have the benefits of Doze, along with permissions settings, to help reduce idle drain even more.

I've had my s2 for about a month and have the same problem. I see where I can set WiFi off during sleep but then won't the cell network then cut on? Is there a way to have the cell network not cut on during sleep too or should I just cut that off completely unless I need it?

eekk and unkilled apps in task manager
notifications - 4 email accounts, instagram, pinterest, tapatalk, clash royale, canvas (for school) and the normal android notifications.

currently at 54% battery life. Shows recent battery usage at 4d 12h 12m 3s - thats pretty darn good. IMO

Go to settings click on privacy then click location. Turn it to wifi only. Then the most important step is is click on improvise accuracy and turn both of the scanners OFF. Doing those two things right there will save you a lot of power. Also turn off briefing unless you use it a lot because it updates al the time and stop any weather app u may have from updating every 5 minutes. Worked for me!

I agree with all of the above. During standby, having the location on will burn through your battery for sure. All these new apps want to gather info on where you are all of the time. My practice is to keep the location off all of the time and only turn it on if I actually need it.

My habit is also to set the advanced wifi to never be on when sleeping, but I am not sure that makes any substantial difference. Same with the bluetooth. I usually keep it off. Recently, we bought a new car with a bluetooth stereo, so it has been more convenient to leave the bluetooth on my device on all the time so that it just connects as soon as I start the car. My battery usage for standby bluetooth did not seem substantial.

I have only had the S2 for less than a week and the battery life is incredible. It rivals and probably beats my old iPad 3. If you know anything about that particular iPad, it has a lead acid car battery in there to drive the original OS, CPU and the then-new retinal display. After Apple updated the OS and made it more energy efficient, the battery life became amazing. The only problem is that it is so heavy that I can use it to pound nails.
