Why Is WCDMA Faster Than LTE?

I'm on MetroPCS & they use T-Mobile's Network! Whenever I'm on LTE & In my opinion, when the nearest tower providing me data is "congested", I received speeds of 1.7Mbps (downlink) & .1Mbps (Uplink). But when I manually change the network to WCDMA, I get constant speeds of 4Mbps (downlink) and 1.1Mbps (uplink). I was wondering why WCDMA was faster but my phone was always connected to LTE even though it was set on automatic (GSM-WCDMA-LTE) & according to some reports, phones connect to the fastest network available near you (but in this instance, it neglected to switch to a less-congested network technology that is called WCDMA).
