Why pay $200 more for the 2 XL?

Riddle me this. Why is the smaller iPhone X more expensive than the iPhone 8 plus. It's a taller iPhone 8 for $300 more. The reason... because Apple. And, sadly, they set market pricing. Expect the Pixel 3 to have a smaller, bezel free version....and the price to jump up again.

My guess would be the cost of the screen on the X vs the 8. But I'm not very familiar with Apple hardware...

I can see the pitch now. "We listened, and reduced bezel size by 50%. :::someone in the audience shouts "woo" in a high pitched tone, followed by applause.:::

IMO, the market and trends dictate what companies do. In some sort of complex equation (that I don't understand), companies such as Apple, Samsung, Google, Huawei, etc. are jumping on the bezeless design and loaded-to-the-hilt with features smartphones.

Its like Apple took a page from Samsung and created a PRO version to rival the Note line.

So now we have flagships in 2 sizes, and then ultra-high end devices. Its nothing new, but since Apple is doing it, the iPhone X is ironically something to talk about.

LG - V30
Huawei - Mate 10 Pro
Samsung - Note 8
One Plus - OP5T

These companies know many (not all) people are willing to pay top dollar for the "best" smartphone. Instead of adding features into their flagship phones, companies reserve the very best for their ultra high end devices. Sprinkle in a new feature or two on the flagship and bump the price just a little.

Its funny because I'm sure we are paying for the "cost" of removing a headphone jack.

You know what's even funnier? The fact this bezel-less phenomenon is just a stop-gap until the flexible / foldable form factors come around and actually justify this pricepoint (theoretically). I think they're just priming their consumers for this buy first, ask questions about benefits later philosophy for years now.

Agreed. We didn't know we needed more screen until we were told we needed more.

Recall how there were rumors of a Google Pixel Ultra just a month ago? I wouldn't be surprised to see one next year.

Google Pixel Ultra.....that just rolls off the tongue. 😂

I keep looking at the Pixel 2 and see it's appeal for "pocketability" and one handed use.

It's an even more compelling argument because it has the same internals and camera.

Pocketability is very important to me and that's why I ordered the Pixel 2. I'm still single and don't wish to remain so forever so cargo pants are out of the question.

The main reason I bought the 2 XL was because I wanted a bigger screen in a smaller footprint.

I wouldn't Go that far. I never liked large bezel phones and last year's pixels were just a no for me.

I'm the opposite. While I'm not looking for a phone with huge and chunky bezels, I feel the bezels of the Pixel 2 add to its usability. Some bit of bezel helps prevent accidental touches as well as giving it better balance when using it with one hand, especially when reaching for the top of the screen or the nav bar at the bottom.

I can appreciate the aesthetics of tiny bezels but for me, having a little extra meat to hold on to is nice (that's what she said.)

:x ahaha

If my eyes were perfect like in my 20s and early thirties I probably would consider a smaller screen phone just because it would be easier to cart around. Now in my 50s, need to put on reading glasses to even look at my large screen phone.

I am waiting for a phone (or app) to come out that can be tuned to my eye sight. So the screen would look blurry to other people but crystal clear to me... Billion dollar idea there.

Fair enough. Bezels never bothered me until it was pointed out.

I blame Samsung for all of this, with their dang edge displays.. bezel.jpg

Seriously this is a good question. Why is the XL $200 more than the 2? If like Google said in their keynote, "we don't reserve features for the bigger device" (oh shut up) than why are they greedily charging more for the XL if the only differentiators are the bigger screen and bigger battery?

If anything they should be charging less for the XL due to all the display issues.

Because as been stated, bigger higher res screen, more expensive design and bigger battery, those things aren't free. They valued those things at $200, if you don't, then don't buy it.

Really it's that simple. If you want those things you pay what they want, if no one buys them, then the market will speak and the price adjusted.

I never understood this form of jealousy. "I cannot afford or am too cheap to pay the asking price so I will complain and call it unfair"

What about the design is more expensive? I’m not jealous I just think the Pixel phones are crap.

Zach for JerryRigEverything showed how crappy these phones build quality really is. I mean the phones have paint on them and the pixel 2 bent and cracked without any effort.

More raw materials for a larger phone, magnesium subframe, tighter spaces for the components like speakers, smaller batches of phones made due to expected lower demand compared to the cheaper smaller phone all add to it costs.

As examples.

And again, Google just like every company knows there will be a demand for the larger phone and there for can charge a premium for it. And rightly so.

Of and as for that Yahoo, yeah okay, first it was a smaller Pixel not the larger, second, his tests are not real world and not controlled and third you just showed your true colors and intention with your last comment in this thread.

There was no secret the phones are coated it is not different than other phones powder coating or clear coating their phones. It was a design choice to hide the radio lines and a darn good one.

News flash, ALL PHONES scratch when you take a razer blade to them unless the backs and sides are gorilla glass.

Peace I'm out.

Well yeah if you think they're crap then you wouldn't get the Pixel 2 let alone spring for a $200 XL. No one is going to change your mind on that.

Why does Apple charge more for their bigger phones? Because they can. You think they couldn't include stuff in the smaller one? I always remember when Siri was exclusive to the new phone and people got it on the older phone from jailbreaking without an issue.. no hardware claims like everyone claimed.

They do it because they can. As for the topic at hand why pay? Well .. for bigger screen / battery. That is the reason for the bigger one and the cost difference. It will vary from person to person if they find it valuable or not.
