Why root?

I am a newcomer here and will be getting my first Android device and Incredible II and have a couple questions.

This phone is actually for my wife and as she does not like too much change I am thinking that rooting and customizing too much may not be the best idea. I need the phone and OS to be stable as i will not be able to pry this out of her hands once she has it to update it etc.

The main thing i want to be able to do is tether wihout buying a package from VZ which I am not even sure if there is one. Is there a way to install an app on the phone that will allow this or do I NEED to root this and load up a new OS and update frequently?

Thats all really. Just need stable useable OS.

Thank you.

Why NOT!?! lol. Anyways, rooting is not for everyone. You don't have to root to get all teathering apps either. You can find apps to teather (wifi) from third party venders, you just wont find them in the market. Easy Teather is 10 bucks but you have to download it to sd card and install from there.

Keep in mind, rooting doesn't necessarily mean you have to do custom ROMs, kernels, etc. It simply means that you CAN if you so desire. My primary reason for wanting to root is to remove all the bloatware. I don't think I'm going to go too wild with flashing custom ROMs and kernels like I did on my Droid. There are also some very useful apps you can only use when rooted. YMMV,

Thanks guys. I would love to root and go crazy with custom roms and would if this was mine.

I would like to dump all of the bloatware as well. Cant you just remove the applications that you do not want? When I root what is the best way to get rid of the bloatware?

Thanks for you time. I will poke around here and search for other posts as well. If you know of posts that could help me please link them.

I rooted my wife to be's phone, she is so happy (I did serious research, and got her all hooked up) and now she just grabs my hair every night and has her way with me.....rooting is for pros....

I have read about and used several different reasons to root my phone, but you have the best response I've ever read! Hats off to you man, and congrats on the upcoming nuptials.

No you can't just remove all the apps you don't want several of them are built into the base kernel of the phone. Meaning to remove them you have to have super user access. The best bet if you are not going to flash custom ROMs (most all of which have all the bloat removed from them) is to install titanium backup for ease of use and to help support a developer that has put out some great apps I suggest going all out and paying for the pro key but there is a free version too. Then you can choose to freeze the apps which will make them disappear but leave them installed for ease of updating when new software becomes officially available or deleting them all together. My advice if you choose to delete them is to do one at a time and play around witty your phone after each one is deleted create a backup after you have verified that the phone is still stable and go slow. Since they write all of the bloat into the kernel sometimes deleting something will cause the whole thing to destabilize and crash. Once we have a permanent root solution I am sure there will be much more information posted.
