Android Central Question

When I open it appears a message says, " Settings has stopped Unexpectedly Would you like to send an error report to htc ?

I found this on net. I was experiencing this problem from long time and as soon as i uninstalled updates to google maps, my display and gestures crashing problem fixed. :)

...i am not an android expert but as soon as i got the solution, i joined androidcentral to share my experience.

Oh I see -- thanks for sharing the tip! But uninstalling updates to such an important app like Google Maps might not be feasible for a lot of users. Which phone do you have? If you re-update Google Maps, does the problem come back?

I updated the google maps again and the 'display and gestures' starts crashing again.

So i uninstalled updates again, it's an easy option for me as i am not a frequent user of google maps.

I am not completely blaming the 'google maps updates' as my phone is a bit old (HTC one e9s dual sim, android version 5.0.2) and not receiving any more software updates.

Ah, that may be the issue -- I think we're getting to the point where apps are losing compatibility with Lollipop.

Many, many thanks to karam Singh1 for diagnosing the problem. His (or her) solution is 100% right.

This has been bugging me for a few years.

Google only has bazillions of dollars - one of their programmers could spend half a day fixing this, instead of many users having unnecessary hassles. Shame on you Google.

Thanks again.

If you're in the same situation where you're trying to use a Lollipop device (which is 7 years old and no longer supported by Google), I wouldn't place the blame on Google. APIs become obsolete, and a typical Android version may start to lose compatibility with current apps after about 7-8 years. Apart from that, continuing to use a Lollipop device could put you at risk for security vulnerabilities (which again, would not be Google's fault).

Google makes the Android OS, and they make the Maps app. Support it properly (i.e don't introduce bugs elsewhere on the phone) or don't support it at all. I have submitted several bug reports over the last 2 years. Just another big corporation that doesn't give a damn.

The issue is still that you're dealing with an out-of-date OS version. It doesn't matter if they make it -- if it's out-of-date, it's out-of-date. Apple doesn't guarantee support for its out-of-date iOS versions either -- should they be shamed as well? After all, they made iOS and those iPhones.

Sure, in an ideal world, every device and every OS version would be supported forever, with all apps completely backwards compatible all the way to Eclair. But this just isn't feasible in the tech world.

My phone and OS can't be that out of date, because the current version of Maps installs correctly and has full, 100% functionality. The issue has nothing to do with out of date this or out of date that. Google has introduced a bug which they have never acknowledged and never fixed.

You haven't yet mentioned which phone you have and which OS you're on. If it is in fact out of date, then it very much has to do with out of date this and out of date that. When something is out of date, there is no guarantee that a current app will work 100% correctly. A current app may very well work 100% correctly, which is great, but if there's some incompatibility introduced by a more current update to the app, that's not necessarily a bug or glitch.

I have a feeling I will not be able to convince you of this, so the only other thing I can suggest is to give feedback to Google about your issue. Good luck.

Can you provide more information?

For anyone who still use old htc phone that face same problem above and doesn't want to uninstall google map, just download maps go. It's still work great and just fine + it use less resource
