Why slow downloads to SD card but not to internal storage?

Has anyone run into an issue with very slow downloads when saving to an external SD card while downloading to internal storage has normal high speeds? I tried formatting the card in Windows just to see if it makes any difference but it does not. Any suggestions?

SD cards are just slower storage devices.

Welcome to Android Central! I agree with hallux. Even the cards with faster speeds will be significantly slower than the phone's Internal Storage. That's one of the reasons we usually recommend against moving apps to SD cards (or formatting SD cards as Internal Storage).

Even the fastest SD cards available are less than 1/10th the speed of the internal storage on many new phones, they are slower than modern data speeds as well so I'm not surprised you see slower download speeds when saving to SD card.
