Why the Android 12 4.1 update messed up Samsung Galaxy S10 pulse oximeter sensor?

My Samsung Galaxy S10 phone received the latest Samsung One UI 4.1 update from Verizon (US) earlier in May.
Right after the successful update installation, the pulse oximeter sensor on the back of the phone stopped working. The light doesn't come on when you try to use the sensor via the Samsung Health app. This renders the sensor useless.

Any suggestions why this happened or how it can be resolved?
