Why the Late Announcement?

Reveal the specs...that's all I am talking about. Didn't mention marketing.
They know the specs of the phone so they could release it with more info on when the phone will be released.
These really crappy Instagram things they are doing are more annoying than anything else and reveal almost nothing about the phone.

Revealing the specs is marketing.

Now your are being very picky. It's not marketing that is going to cost them lots of money is it?

Revealing the specs and then not doing anything until release would do them more harm than good. News would come out that the phone specs have been revealed, then no one would wait/anticipate the device, since we all know what it is.

Right now, we can speculate on what the specs are, we hear leaks etc, but we don't know what the device really has. So, closer to release, HTC will reveal the phone, the final design, the final specs, generate hype and start marketing hard until release.

It's a very simple concept which I don't know why you cannot grasp. Surprised that I've even had to explain it multiple times.

Doubt that has much to do with late announcement and release. Most people don't care if the phone has the latest software.

Yet you think most people are waiting with baited breath about when HTC releases their phone period? They aren't exactly Apple here. Again, they rushed it last year and it was a disaster. Take your time and get the software right. Android N is already in preview. Of course it can be ready. How do you know HTC hasn't already been working with it? They are rumored to be doing the Nexus for the next 3 years. Having the latest software and updating it quickly matters. It's the reason many choose IOS over Android to begin with.

EDIT: I thought M Preview was released in October but it was actually May 28th last year. They released it much earlier this year but M10 won't launch with N. I was thinking the A9 launched in December with M after the preview was October.

Actually surprised you can't grasp the opposing view! It's also quite simple.

Let's leave it at that shall we.

Not even Apple, with their obscene amounts of cash do that. They reveal a phone, a week or two later it’s on sale.

Apple uses their leaks to reveal way ahead of time with plenty of FREE publicity. There are already plenty of iphone 7 reveals and we all know they usually don't come out till Sept.

No, I actually don't think most seriously consider HTC when buying a smartphone. A big reason why the M9 flopped was because it arguably wasn't much of an upgrade over M8 and they recycled old design.

The more leaks come out the less interested I am getting in this phone to be honest. If Sense 8 is going to be very close to Stock Android I might as well go with stock Android at this point. I stopped using Blinkfeed after that Republic App fiasco. The battery is nothing special. The screen is nothing special. The camera is playing catch up. The sound will be questionable and that used to be a given. They still refuse to sell a follow up to the Max device for those who want a bigger screen which I still find baffling. I have a month before I can upgrade my phone so the phone will be released by then so I guess we'll see.

You are here complaining because HTC doesn't build a bigger phone and since they may make the OS more like stock Android. Maybe they are trying to save their company. Ranting about what you don't like won't get you what you want. Is this a forum for complaining or to legitimately discuss phones. I want to hear about the M10.

I am sorry. I didn't realize I need to run my comments by you before I post. What exactly are you waiting to hear about that is going to be some big surprise. What does them trying to save their company have to with me spending my hard earned money? That's an HTC problem not mine. I don't owe them anything like you seem too for some reason. My last two phones has been the M7 and M9. So far, I am not that excited about any of the 2016 phones to be honest.

Aside from that. You don't even make any sense at all. Right now, there is nothing compelling about this phone based on the leaks. That's my opinion. You are entitled to yours. I am not trying to get HTC to change anything. This isn't IOS. This is Android. There will be a lot of options. Including an HTC Nexus which will likely be a phablet that Google won't allow HTC to make boneheaded decisions on so there is always that.

There should be a "Report" button like other forums have. A vacation was given. It passed and the same ol' b-o-l-o-g-n-a upon return. Sullies the thread as the rest of us are just dreaming out loud.

Mod note: such button exists.

I haven't made up my mind yet and won't until the phone is officially released because my contract isn't up until then. Again, this isn't supposed to be some lovefest for this phone where you are not allowed to be critical. I am a fan of HTC. My last two phones have been One devices. I even bought the M9 last year when it wasn't the best phone available because I still preferred the brand despite its shortcomings. I am not going to do that again.

(mod note : cleaned things up a bit)

What's with HTC announcing this phone so late? Samsung and LG announced quite impressive phones this year, that I honestly don't think HTC will bother topping with the HTC M10. Since the M8, they're on a downward spiral making their phones less impressive than the previous.

So if the phone is going to be to this level, why are they waiting for after people buy Samsung and LG's amazing phones before announcing the HTC M10? Surely 1 way to have won some market share would have been to announce and release before the others so customers buy the HTC M10 before seeing what Samsung and LG have to offer.

I've been a diehard HTC fan since the days of Windows Mobile, but they've been pushing me away these past few years and I may buy my first non-HTC smartphone...
I'm honestly not sure why they are so behind. I get that they don't want to be lost in the cross fire of the G5 and the S7, but that should have made them announce/release the phone sooner.

Galaxy S7/S7E was released recently and the G5 will release on April 1st. They probably wanted to steer clear of the Samsung/LG launch.

Would have been worse if they announced it earlier, they'll get killed trying to advertise it against Sammy/LG. Like it or not, most people don't hear about a phone at release from the tech conference (except for iPhones), they hear about it through advertising and in-store promotion.

I actually agree with you. I am surprised it has taken LG so long to release the phone after their announcement. If HTC announces it on the 12th and releases it in stores a week or two after that it will only be a few weeks after the LG launch and several weeks after the Samsung launch. Not really a big deal in the grand scheme of things. Especially if they have taken the time to nail the hardware and software. Now if they delay the launch well into May then they have squandered another opportunity. More than anything people want to buy a phone immediately after it is announced and not wait around.

Yeah HTC isn't a preorder type of phone. They don't have the base. Part of it is the brain washing marketing blitz Samsung can provide. Also gimmicks such as BOGO, Gear, Watches do get peoples attention. Most people don't research the phone and toss in rebates, free items and they go "weee". They see what friends have (say), they see "deals" and then they buy. Most still buy on contract and have been cycled to March/April/May for the most part on that.

You delay and get deeper into the fiscal year and most have "knee jerk" bought phones. Then the purists scrutinize it for their use. If it is a well tested and refined phone it will get more visibility. But due to M9 debacle; HTC is heading uphill right now because many are of the "negative" mindset.

That being said April 12 is right around the corner so hopefully we get more leaks and information to salivate or turn our noses up in disgust but will allow us to talk about whether or not we will buy it. :-)

Did they not announce the M9 and release it shortly thereafter? I had the phone in my hand April 15th last year. They are now taking longer to announce the phone, ie. April 12, so hopefully they are taking the extra time to do it right this time software wise and even if it doesn't get to carriers until the end of April this time it is still ok. I was actually questioning LG's decision in my post. It seems like a waste to announce the phone the same time as the S7 and and take what seems like a long time to then release it. At this point, it will be released closer to when HTC releases their phone than Samsung.
