Sadly the PS4 will not fail and it should due to the lack of backward compatibility which has been cited already. They will allow it to play "USED" games so they won't single handedly destroy Gamestop's entire business model. That being said,Ttere are far too many people out there that simply don't care about anything other than what they want and if they can play their games, PS4 or XBox 720. They take whatever Micro$oft or $ony throws at them and they will accept it without question. I personally think that any PSN purchased games should work on PS4 but as of last week they were saying "They being $ony" would not work. Not that they won't change that but who knows. Sooooo you will most likely have to repurchase those games AGAIN if you want them. Or keep your PS3 and use it as long as they allow you to without remotely shutting them down or restricting them from use in some other way. We've seen it before, PS2 to PS3 compatibility was fine up to the PS3 80GB model and then nothing after that. XBOX to XBOX 360 never had compatibility IIRC. Similarly, I don't believe the Wii ever played Gamecube games either. So in summation, the controller issue, although a good point, will probably not be an issue and as long as the games don't go to $79.99 or more and the system price stays under $400 then it will thrive as always. Just my 2 cents.
My take on this.....anyone remember when the Atari 2600 was out? Remember when the next version came out? Remember when the NES was out? Remember the SNES? I think Sega was probably the only early console that had backwards compatibility.
Back in the Stone Age of cartridge consoles.....my first one was Atari 2600....we had no choice. You either kept your current console, or sold it and all the game for a newer one. Used games, PSN games from PS3 not playable on PS4....I can agree that would be annoying. Backwards compatibility? I dont think its that big a deal... If you get the PS4...and cant play your PS3 games....you are keeping your PS3. If you boycott the PS4.....you are keeping your PS3.
Regardless of what you do.....you are keeping your PS3...lol. I still have a fat model PS2 and orig Xbox. I rarely play games on them...but I am keeping them until I finish all the PS2 and Xbox games I have. Or until they die...whichever comes first.
Xbox to 360 had backwards comp. I think it stayed better than the PS3's over the years. I just missed it with the PS3...my first PS3 was the fat model Metal Gear version, still going strong right now. How many ppl know about PS2 games being playable on the PS3? How many ppl even know about the orig Xbox or PS1? The Wii could play Gamecube games too. Eventually.... Gamecube games disappeared. Same for PS2. Do ppl still make PS2 versions of games? I dont really know.
They stop making games for the older systems, they stop making older consoles. Backwards compatibility just isnt a priority for future consoles.
PSN games not playable on the PS4? That is more irritating to me. Read somewhere its a hardware issue.....Sony going to AMD, not using Cell anymore. IF PSN games have to be remade for the PS4...I would hope Sony either offer deep discounts for us that have PSN games, or offer them free. Used games possibly going bye bye? That is more irritating to me. Amazon is my shopping preference now for used games. Game Stop too from time to time.
I also have a PS+ subscription. How does that effect more going to the PS4? I hope Sony has a solution for PSN, PS+ games.
I think the used games issue is there are gonna be more games available for download with the PS4. There are PS3 games that are available for download as soon as they release. So thats not a big deal. Just dont get rid of disc games. Sometimes it sounds like Sony is going all downloadable and no more discs. Regardless....I am all in launch day if I can afford it.
