Why the SGS2 over the Nexus Prime?

The sgs2 is coming Sept 16

Err, that is the point I am trying to make in response to the thread title whichi is what my post is about. Perhaps you misread my post. I mistakenly from your previous post that you meant the Nexus Prime was a sure thing for Sprint already.

At this point the SGS2 is what I've been waiting for and will more than suit my needs. It's a proven phone that, despite being released internationally 5 months ago, still blows the pants off of every other Android phone on the market.

Wait for the Nexus if:

-You want vanilla Android, and guaranteed software updates right when they're released.
-You want NFC.
-You can wait until 2012 for a possible Sprint version. It will probably happen, but remember the Nexus S 4G took a while to come out after the Nexus S.
-You want an HD quality screen.
-You're willing to bet on vaporware (although I admit that I happen to believe all of the rumors about the Nexus Prime myself lol).

Technology improves everyday and like many have already mentioned you'll never buy anything if you keep waiting, but hey in this economy sometimes it's a good call to hold out for a while if what you've got is working fine.

One thing that I find very appealing about the SGSII is that the device is proven. It's been out for a couple of months now in Europe and we know exactly what the hardware and software look like and we know that they both work extremely well.

With the Nexus Prime we have no solid details and no guarantee that the phone won?t have technical issues when it comes out. I know that you wouldn?t expect problems from a ?Google? phone but take a look at some Nexus S reviews. Even after all this time that phone is plagued with reception issues that stem from the design of the antenna. I?m not saying the Prime will have the same problems but just using it as an example to show that even Nexus phones can have design flaws.

The SGSII is a known commodity with no major flaws to speak of.

Some specific concerns that I have about the Prime:

It has a 4.6? screen. I know everyone says that the lack of physical buttons will prevent the phone from being too big but? I need to see that first. I have major doubts about that and I don?t want a huge phone. The size of the SGSII is as big as I'm willing to go.

The Nexus S didn?t have removable/upgradeable memory. I would expect that the Prime will remedy that situation but until we know for sure this is a minor cause for concern.

When will it be released? Who will release it? By the time it comes out, won?t there be some other ?next big thing? on the horizon that will dwarf its specs? I don't want to get caught in that cycle where I never end up getting anything because there is always going to be something that looks better on the horizon.

The SGSII is an incredible phone. Current consensus from reviewers is that it's the best android phone ever made. I think that's good enough for me. ;)

while i didnt agree with the usb storage on the nexus s, after copying over my sd card, its nothing to use as a reason NOT to get a nexus, sd cards can go bad, can go corrupt, and can be easily stolen.

only real issue i have with the nexus is the NO LED light, its just a nice thing to have.

add to the list NO carrier ID/carrier bloatware.

the instant updates is a real good thing to be honest, i mean im ready running 2.3.5/.

Ha ha I hate how my post becomes slightly redundant by the time I edit it, oh well. I guess it proves our point about getting caught in that endless upgrade cycle. You know it's bad when even your comments become "obsolete" in mere seconds in this day and age.

I really want the next Nexus device, but there is just no word if Sprint will get it soon, or next May 2012, like the last Nexus-S. For now I will happily sell my Nexus-S 4G for the new Sprint Galaxy S2.

So you can play the waiting game forever, and never get anything new. Why get the Droid-Prime, you should just wait for the Galaxy S3 rumored to be out earlier than normal next year, with QuadCore, or skip that and just wait for the Motorola Nexus-Four.

The Droid-Prime will only be on Verizon to start, and there has been ZERO specifics if it really will be out in October, could be December release like all other Nexus launches. And it being made by Samsung will follow same trend as last year. The Nexus-S was just a slightly pumped up Galaxy S1, just running the newest Android OS stock with no bloatware, but hardware wise it was not radically different.

Rumors are the Droid-Prime will also be a Galaxy S2 based phone, just clocked at a little higher speeds, and better screen, but not night and day better. And of course it will be running Android 4.0 But the XDA crew will get Ice Cream running on Galaxy S2 based phones first I am sure. So a Droid-Prime running Android 4.0 vs a Galaxy S2 phone running Android 4.0, I doubt they will perform that much different, most likely be very similar.

The only difference will be HD screen and nfc I think. Everything else can be done through rooting. Overclocking cpu, ice cream sandwich, etc.

I'm fortunate that I have a business account and only have a one year contract. I just finished my last one with my Epic 4G and will most likely be getting the SGS2 Epic Touch. Worst case scenario, the Nexus Prime comes out and is a killer phone, I'll only have to wait a few months to get one. But then again, who knows what new phone will be in the works by then? Epic 4G II anyone? :D

I'm new to Android. Is there a way to put vanilla Android OS on a phone with a carrier overlay, for example, the GSII?

I assume it requires rooting. Is the GSII likely to be rooted?

If you do like watching videos but don't want to waste time converting them first, the E4GT will have the internal codecs that Sammy install in all of their devices, allowing you to drag and drop avi, divx, mkv, and wmv files and watch immediately. As a stock Android unit, the Nexus Prime won't be able to handle most video formats, requiring software players that do not take advantage of hardware acceleration.

Of course, if you want to root your device, all bets are off.

If it is like the current Nexus with no SD card, that is a non-starter for me. If I wait 6 months (or more) only to finally get the specs and they aren't what I want, I would be pissed. That is why I am going with the S2.

If you are under contract or your current phone is working well for you, then I guess you can wait it out. I am not willing to.

I currently own the Sprint Nexus-S 4G, loving it, and before that had the Nexus-One, I really like the "nexus" line of phones, but seeing all the previews of the upcoming Galaxy S2 for Sprint, has me double guessing if I should get the new Galaxy S2 ? But I would hate myself if then come December Sprint releases some bad ass "Ice Cream" phone, be it the Prime or some other type of nexus device.

Should I just stick it out and wait to see what Sprint might be coming out with towards the end of the year ? Worst case my Nexus-S 4G will get the Ice Cream update first before any other phone.

Opinions wanted

I got mine on pre-order for $130. I look at it this way: The phone is $550 without a contract. If I decide to cancel my contract at some point, it is a $200 fee. I still only paid $330.

I have a feeling the S2 will keep me happy for at least a year though.

Yes, new phones come out every month...but really...they are marginally better than the last. I don't see holding out for a phone that doesn't even exist (specs are all rumored as is release date) if you need a phone. I am going from a 566mhz HTC Hero to a phone 4x as fast. I got my Hero when it came out less than 2 years ago. That is a big difference.

lol

I see this all over the place....

!) more days I'm bugging out with the waiting and wy wife is going to break my computer because im always on it looking up stuff for this phone... Im getting this over the Prime because its what i want. Later if i can my plan will be to get the Prime on a second line and just pay the extra 30 bucks a month. (maybe)
the videos on Youtube for this phone (international) there some crazy things with the USB and blue tooth. I sware if this had the Tablet and labtop accessory i would be i heaven... :D I have said this before but not enough lol

Don't forget ETF effective 9-9-11 is rumored to be $350

Absolutely! This phone will have a strong developer following and will be rooted before release! And yes, you can load a vanilla Android rom to a phone that launches with an Android skin/carrier overlay. Just root!
