Why won't my HTC One Mini 2 switch on or charge?

HTC One Mini 2 won't switch on or charge

Hi - the phone ran out of battery completely. Since then it won;'t charge or switch on. When plugged into the charger a battery logo with a lightning flash appears, together with a flashing orange warning LED. I have held down the volume up + down + power buttons for several minutes, after doing this the battery charging logo appears but stays at 1% charged, even when left over night. Then when unplugged the phone appears to have lost all charge.

Could be that battery completely died, how old is the phone?
